With a terrific showing in wine competitions across the South this fall, Richard Childress can now add a different championship title to his list – the Winegrowers Cup.
The 9th Annual NC State Fair Wine Competition was most certainly a victory for Childress Vineyards. The 2006 Barrel Select Cabernet Franc was awarded Winegrowers Cup and Best of Show honors out of the 307 wines submitted by 41 N.C. wineries. The Cabernet Franc was also awarded the high honor of Best Red Vinifera for this year’s entries. Watch for the release of this award-winning variety in the spring of 2009.
In all, Childress Vineyards took home the most medals with 33 total, and three of these were the highly-coveted Double Gold awards. Other than the Cabernet Franc, the 2005 Signature Meritage and the 2005 Barrel Select Chardonnay both received a prestigious double gold award and are currently available for purchase.
Four Childress wines were praised with single gold medals. The 2005 Barrel Select Cabernet Sauvignon, 2006 Signature Merlot, 2006 Barrel Select Merlot, and 2005 Barrel Select Syrah all received gold honors. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah are still available, but keep an eye out for the Signature and Barrel Select Merlot. Each will be released along with the Cabernet Franc in 2009.
