Childress Vineyards Wine Fetches High Price at Auction Benefit

  By Kathleen Watson

LEXINGTON, NC, August 17, 2004 — Wines from soon-to-be-open Childress Vineyards drew bids totaling more than $3,000 during a dinner and wine tasting benefit held in connection with the NASCAR race at Watkins Glen this past weekend.

A 3-liter bottle of Childress Vineyards 2003 Merlot wine commanded a price of $2360 while two 750 ml bottles of the same vintage fetched $500 a piece from bidders at the first annual Taste for The Race in Canandaigua, NY, at Fox Run Vineyards on Friday night, August 13, 2004.

Richard Childress, chief executive officer of Richard Childress Racing and managing member of Childress Winery, LLC, was a guest at the special event that benefited Mercy Flight Central, an air ambulance service for the Finger Lakes and Central New York region. Joining Childress was his winery partner Greg Johns and Robby Gordon, driver of the #31 car for RCR Racing.

Childress Vineyards will be North Carolina's newest and largest winery when it opens to the public this fall. The 35,000 square-foot winery is located at the gateway to the Yadkin Valley, the state's only American Viticultural Appellation, at the crossroads of Highways 52 and 64 in Lexington, NC. It will be open daily for tours and wine tastings, lunch at the Bistro, and special events.

Childress Vineyards will release 11 wines this year, including three Signature Reserve wines, 5 Varietals and 3 House Wines, all crafted by award-winning winemaker Mark Friszolowski.
